METAMORPHOSIS #3 | DIGITAL VIDEO WALL
Metamorphosis is the screening programme, curated by Gemma Fantacci, currently on view on the Metronom's Digital Video Wall (DVW). The unique location of the DVW allows 24-hour viewing from the street, transforming it into an urban intervention, a way to redesign and change the street's image.
Metamorphosis is the theme chosen for the fifth edition of the DVW, which focuses on the visual and conceptual investigation carried out by several artists at the intersection of artificial intelligence, bots, algorithms, virtual and gaming environments. The series unfolds across multiple thematic threads, exploring how the new frontiers of technology shape human dynamics and how they constantly redefine our relationship with machines and technology.
Event Modeling (2023) is a project created by artists Ziyang Wu and Mark Ramos. The artwork consists of two videos, AI Fossil and #dump, and pronounces how our reality is being mediated and profoundly changed by digital technologies. The two pieces are played simultaneously on the same screen, one above and the other below.
To create AI Fossil, Wu takes content pushed by his own social media algorithms and feeds it to an AI, which transforms them into 3D models that are then labeled by the artists with keywords. At this point, the #dump program comes into play, detecting these keywords as soon as they appear in tweets and materializing them in real-time in a virtual salt mine, functioning as a landfill.
Hinting at activities of extraction and expansion, the 3D models will continue to landfill the landscape, a metaphor of how digital technology will colonise every facet of our lives.
