IL PARADOSSO DEL TENERE MENTRE SI DÀ

On Tuesday 16 May 2023, at 6.30 pm, Metronom inaugurates Il paradosso del tenere mentre si dà, a bi-personal exhibition by artists Mariella Bettineschi (Brescia, 1948) and Yelena Yemchuk (Kiev, 1970). Some artworks made by the two artists, both photographs and paintings, coming from different projects are picked up together in the exhibition.

Bettineschi and Yemchuk come from different generations, as well as having different backgrounds, but share a strongly feminist practice and a deeply personal imprint they infused in their artworks.

By re-reading and re-writing, Bettineschi puts herself and her work in a constant testing process. Photos are printed and photographed again, changed through material interventions, such as the addition of pearls or fabrics. The result is a work stratified on several levels, a reflection of afterthoughts and experiences lived by the artist herself.

From Yemchuk's artworks a representation of female figures, that firmly wants to go away from the one generally used today, emerges: the subjects chose by the artist are complex, imperfect but fascinating women, from whom it is difficult to look away.

Il paradosso del tenere mentre si dà is a reference to the subtitle of a book by anthropologist Annette B. Weiner dedicated to certain Aboriginal objects, capable of retaining the spiritual essence of the person who gives them. Indeed, the exhibition assuming the form of a journey through the life and imagination of the two artists: the viewer gaze receives their experiences and memories as a gift, open the way to the possibility that contemporary art could be read as the prospective of donate something intangible, like the very essence of the artist.

The exhibition can be visited at the gallery headquarters in via Carteria 10, Modena, on the following days and times: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9.00 to 13.00 and from 14.00 to 18.00, or by appointment.
